Tassafaronga Housing

with David Baker + Partners Architects
Client: Oakland Housing Authority
2007-2009
currently under construction

The project consists of a 7.5 acre site in East Oakland on site formerly occupied by a mid 20th century housing project. A variety of unit types are found in a new urban neighborhood built around a re-connected street grid. At one end of the site, a three story apartment building with a parking garage provides one, two and three bedroom apartments and a community room. The large public plaza across the street is surrounded by two and three floor townhouses that also line the streets of the development. At the opposite end of the site from the apartments, a former pasta factory will be converted to apartments for low income persons with AIDS.

This project was designed to be highly sustainable from the beginning. The neighborhood was part of the pilot program in LEED for Neighbhood Design with a Design Stage award of Gold. The individual buildings are being developed to LEED for Homes Platinum standards. Features include stormwater infiltration planters, solar hot water heating, a highly efficient building envelope, and ready access to public transportation.
