Boscombe Beach Hut
Competition Entry
2009
This design preserves the singular nature of the semi-detached beach hut through the use of a screen wall that performs a variety of purposes. While the shape preserves the image of a gabled roofline and demarcates the individual units, the perforation pattern refers to Vicotrian lace curtains and the ideas of privacy that led to the creation of the original beach huts. It breaks up sunlight before it reaches the translucent south-facing front wall and helps to moderate the interior temperature of the hut on sunny summer days while providing a bright interior for low-vision users.
By offering both traditional double doors at the front and a sliding door on the side, use of the huts is far more flexible than the tradition version. The small deck beside each hut allows users to sit outside in a semi-private area removed from the pavement and car park at the front. It is also possible to cross-ventilate the space and bring in light from two sides with the doors open.
