After recieving one piece of unsolicited mail from a religious group, I returned the reply card and was inundated with a flurry of follow-up envelopes. Each held a strange object (like a piece of foam cut out in the shape of the number “7”) and specific instructions on how to use it as a part of a ritual (followed by a donation) to bring yourself good fourtune.
I assembled this installation in the basement janitor’s closet of an abandoned church, justaposing the mail-order religious items with more tradtional Christian imagery. In doing so, connections between reward and faith are brought forth and the motives behind devotion are questioned
