The Flight 93 Memorial Competition was held to design a permanent memorial to the passengers and crew of the American Airlines plane that crashed into a field in Somerset Coutny, PA during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
We took advantage of the earthern berms that exist as remnants of the coal-mining landscape to create a place of contemplation for viewing the crash site. To mark the flight path of the plane, native Pennsylvania wildflowers are planted in a faceted depression in the earth across the width of the site.
