2D Artwork Research Project

BFA thesis project, University at Buffalo
(Spring 2000, Prof. Paul Vanouse-advisor)

Two-Dimensional Artwork Research Project was a fictitious scientific investigation into creating the perfect fine art painting. The installation of this project in a sterile corporate office environment resembles a lab more than it does a gallery, and results in confusion on the part of the viewer. By creating the American Institute for the Analysis of Two-Dimensional Artwork (AIATDA) as an imagined partner institution to the University at Buffalo's Art Department, art has been turned into a serious business centered on R&D. In service to the ultimate goal of finding applications for this research, this piece references marketing tactics that aim to satisfy the widest possible audience through compromises based on focus groups and surveys.
The show inlcuded three "finished" paintings representing various stages in the process of creating the perfect piece of two-dimensional artwork. A draft copy of the AIATDA's report was also on display, with references to documents with titles including "Stimulus/Response Behavior in Art-Intensive Settings", "The Inverse Relationship Between Toxicology and Quality in Contemporary Art Practice", and "Controlling Mass Populations Through Color and Line".
