36 The Calls

Citu Development/ Architect's Journal Competition
2009

This propsal takes maximizes public space and access to the river while at the same time taking into account the requirements of the developer's program which included office space and a parking requirement. The brick-clad building works in the context of the surrounding warehouses through a sympathetic massing and material treatment. A 3m wide public path ends at a floating park built onto a barge at the water's edge.

While the program called for a garage to accommodate four parking spaces, this project uses a compact automated lift to avoid detrimental excavation at the river's edge. It also removes the need for a ramp down to the parking level which allows more open space for the general public and an improved layout for the ground floor restaurant space. The walkway to the river also allows greater separation to the building next door which increases the amount of windows allowed, providing more daylight to the office space inside.
